Understanding Different Types of Online Poker Players

When you first sit at poker table and look at other players, it may seem intimidating. Some players feel playing poker is like going to battle. They wear physical armor like dark sunglasses, flashy clothing and low-lying hats. They have weapons in the forms of various styles of play and techniques.

But understanding these techniques can help you beat others at the table and find your own style. These are not made up names of poker players. In fact, these are common titles given to the players in poker community to describe a style of play.

Noob (or Newbie)

It is a person who has small knowledge or is completely new to the game. The difference between a newbie and a noob is that a newbie has some intelligence and enthusiasm but have no experience and is often guilty of being new. On the other side, a noob is someone who has no smartness at all and is completely unwilling to learn something.

The Maniacs

The maniacs are those who play almost all hands and raises with any two cards. This kind of player can be drunk, on influence, or just having fun creating lots of thrill. It may seem easy to play against them, but they may pose serious harm to the game as they are very aggressive and they will add a lot of swings to your bankroll and can test you. Sometimes, they put the whole table on tilt and create easy situation for a player who puts right strategies and remains calm.

ABC Poker

ABC poker is a term refers to the style of ‘by the book’ playing in a simple way without any strategy. This type of player outranks an absolute novice or noob. They know how to raise 3x the blind and about blind structure, when to shove when other elementary play and short stacked.  However, ABC player is not a compliment and it is generally player who can be influenced with aggression. ABC poker was definitely a winning strategy five years ago. If you get the right game, it is still profitable. But playing ABC poker will force you to break down in many cash games and poker tournaments.

Nit or Rock

The poker opposite of Calling Station is Rock or Nit. Rock is a player who is not ready to take risks and plays just premium hands in high range. Nit is content to wait for super premium hands and sit back and also blind into oblivion when needed. He plays only Kings, Aces, Queens and even AK. If you are re-raised by Nit, it means they have something very good. You can fold hands up to QQ safely.

The Coffee Houser

When it comes to mislead other players about the strength of hand, this type of player is known as coffee Houser. For example, a player who has AA as first two cards, he might say ‘let’s gamble here’ which seems to be a weaker hand. It is known to be a bad manner in the UK, but it is common in the US.
