Romelu Lukaku to Miss Milan Derby Due to a Thigh Injury

Romelu Lukaku has been ruled out of Inter Milan’s midweek match against Cremonese and could miss next weekend’s derby match against  AC Milan due to a thigh injury.

The Belgian striker suffered a thigh injury during a training session on August 28. Inter’s medical team diagnosed Lukaku with a strain on his left thigh muscle and will need further tests to determine the extent of the injury.

“Romelu Lukaku today underwent testing at the Humanitas Research Hospital in Rozzano, after feeling some muscle pain during training yesterday morning. The tests revealed that he has strained his left thigh. His condition will be reevaluated next week.” Inter said in a statement.

Inter manager Simone Inzaghi is expected to replace Lukaku with Edin Dzeko or Joaquin Correa in forward. Both players are respected names although not on the same level as Lukaku.

Lukaku return to Inter on a one-year loan deal, just 10 months after joining Chelsea for €130 million as the seventh most expensive soccer player ever at the time.

His relationship with The Blues manager Thomas Tuchel became strained after the striker voiced his frustration at failing to find his best form last December.

“Physically I’m doing great. I’m just not very happy with the situation, but that’s normal,” Lukaku said.

“I think the boss has decided to play a different formation but I have to stick at it and get on with it professionally. I’m not happy with the situation but it’s my job and I mustn’t give up.” Lukaku added.

Lukaku soon showed good form when he scored 1 goal and 1 assist after 3 games for Inter this season. The 28-year-old forward scored 30 times in 2020-21, including 24 goals in Serie A as Inter won their first Scudetto in 11 years.
