Xavi Hernandez, Barcelona’s manager, reportedly wants midfielder Frenkie de Jong to stay at the club if he himself remains the coach next season.
Despite rumours of a potential move away from Camp Nou due to Barcelona’s financial difficulties and increased competition in the midfield from younger players like Pedri, Gavi, and Nico, Xavi has praised de Jong’s improvement since he took over as coach.
“Frenkie is an exceptional talent, and his style of play perfectly aligns with Barcelona’s philosophy,” Xavi said.
“His technical skills, vision, and composure on the ball make him a rare gem in modern football.” Xavi added.
According to an interview with De Telegraaf, de Jong expressed his desire to stay at Barcelona for as long as possible, hoping for another eight to ten years at the club.
De Jong admitted that he is happy in Barcelona and sees himself there for the foreseeable future.
“Barcelona is a dream club for me, and I want to stay here for as long as I can. The love and support I have received from the fans and the entire organisation have been incredible.” de Jong said.
“I believe in the project we are building, and I want to be a part of it for many more years.” he added.
The Dutch midfielder, who joined Barcelona in 2019, has agreed to adjust his salary and extend his contract beyond 2026.
Meanwhile Xavi has announced that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.
However, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has reportedly made efforts to convince Xavi, the current head coach to stay at the club.
According to recent reports, Frankie de Jong, the Barcelona midfielder, is attracting interest from several top clubs.
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Manchester United, and Bayern Munich have all been linked with a potential move for de Jong.
