For both league fans and commentators, the Anthony Davis-LeBron James tandem is a repeated draw for the Los Angeles Lakers. After all, there will be a “passing of the torch” between the two stars who will lead the squad.
Vince Carter, though, believes that this may never start happening as planned. The former player sees the center forward as being hesitant to succeed the NBA legend in the organisation.
“I think that the dynamic between the two is based, first of all, on respect. Anthony has a lot of respect for what James has done for the sport, so he’s naturally cornered.” Carter said.
“However, at the same time, he needs to grow up to assume a greater role. And, in the end, this has nothing to do with respecting a colleague more or less.” Carter added.
So for Carter, the power forward falls into a very common trap. Finally, respect prevents you from doing what is best for everyone.
“When the guy you respect is trying to hand you command of the team and be the sidekick, take it. He takes over and then doesn’t look back. It is an honor that someone at this level wants to complement him on the court,” Carter added.
LeBron has Anthony Davis’ real respect on the Lakers. However, additional factors also play a role in this progressive change in leadership.
Perhaps the greatest of all is the star’s health. Due to a number of injuries, he is likely to be absent from the team.
Coach Darvin Ham is aware of this history and, therefore, understands that the center forward is a presence that needs to be managed.
“It is smart, given the responsibility it has been carrying, that we also know how to preserve it. We don’t want to push the pace with Anthony after all so early in the season.” Carter said.
“Pain in the wrong muscle or ligament, for example, can quickly become a serious problem. So, to avoid all that, we are going to monitor his physique very carefully,” Carter added.
