Poker players can’t control their emotions when it comes to ‘position’, especially when it is based on dealer button on a round. It is dealer button which determines the players who could post two blinds but also order of action on all of the betting rounds at the same time.
Big Blind and Small Blind
The first two seats are known as big blind and small blind on the left of dealer. They bet a certain amount to kick-start the game and continue. After placing the bets, the action moves along the table clockwise, when poker players opt for strategy on the basis of where they sit. You should ideally play good hands in mid-position, strong hands in early position, and couple of hands in last position.
Position of six players in poker table
- There is a small blind on the left of dealer button
- Player with dealer button.
- There’s big blind
- There’s ‘under the gun’ after ‘big blind’, the first player to play before flop.
- Later comes the ‘hijack’
- Finally, you will find the cut off, the last position in which you can get loose raise.
When a poker player is supposed to have position, they mean to stay last to act on the street, the player has all the information available before looking for decision, when other rivals need to act without any knowledge.
Early position
The small blind and big blind are two blind seats in ‘early position’. In the same way, players in two seats to the big blind on the left can also be in early position. The player ‘under the gun’ is in ‘early position’ as he is the first to act in the round of pre-flop betting and he doesn’t have any info on his opponents’ intentions yet. In this position, players should have strong enough hands to enter pot as they will not know much about their competitors and they need to act early.
Middle Position
This position is dedicated to the players sitting between dealer’s right and ‘under the gun’ player. In this position, players can get looser starting hands needs as compared to those in early position since there are only few players on their left who still need to act. However, it is risky for you to enter the pot in this position as players have better edge in late position.
Late Position
This position is considered to be the strongest position and it is booked for seats on right side of dealer. These positions are good as players can keep track on action and get the most information possible. If everyone has folded too and you play with average hand, you can easily win pot right away. It also allows players to raise with several cards like Ace when other card may have suited connectors.
Call, fold or Raise
There are three options in poker game – Throw away the card to fold, apply the same as last bet to call, or bet any amount until it is at double the last bet to raise. This is where position plays a vital role. Be in position to know as much you know about the player as possible.
