The Chicago Bulls are reportedly favourites to sign former Los Angeles Lakers guard Russell Westbrook.
Westbrook was traded in this trade deadline, but the Utah Jazz has no interest in his permanence. The trade was settled, first and foremost, because of the first-round draft pick involved.
“If Westbrook is bought out, he’s been most closely associated with the Los Angeles Clippers and Miami Heat, but it could be the Chicago Bulls who ultimately sign him,” ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said.
“If he gets into the buyout market, there’s a lot of interest in Westbrook. I think a team to watch and I think the Bulls will be a front runner. Billy Donovan certainly coached Westbrook in Oklahoma City. If you go further down his bench, Mo Cheeks, Josh Longstaff.
“There is a staff of former OKC assistants who were all well connected and worked well with Westbrook at the Bulls. And you could see how he fits if he just brings some energy and fire to this team’s bench.” Wojnarowski added.
Along with the Bulls, the Los Angeles Clippers and the Miami Heat are keeping an eye on Paul George’s situation.
George contacted Westbrook to try to convince him to play for the Angelino team. Previously, both have played together for the Oklahoma City Thunder. But in Chicago, there’s an even stronger tie to its league past.
Westbrook acquired a reputation as a tough fit among NBA fans and analysts. He is recognised, however, as an exemplary professional and a great teammate wherever he goes.
The logic was no different for the Lakers. While he was the target of constant criticism by Angelinos fans, he left a largely positive image with coaches and players in the squad.
In 52 appearances this season, Westbrook averages 15.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game. He also shoots 41.7% from the ground, 29.6% off the arc, and 65.5% from the foul line.
