Argentina skipper Lionel Messi said he had a crazy dream that God would award him the title and that he couldn’t wait to return to Argentina after winning the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup on Sunday.
Argentina twice squandered a lead (2-0 at halftime and 3-2 in extra time) but won in the end on penalties after the game ended 3-3 at Lusail Stadium, Doha, Qatar.
Messi, who was also named the tournament’s best player, was excited and relieved while holding the FIFA World Cup trophy in the mixed zone.
“It’s crazy that it has happened this way. I wanted it very much. I knew God was going to give it to me, I sensed it was going to be this. Now to enjoy.” Messi said.
Messi also spoke about the suffering he felt during what many consider to be one of the most exciting World Cup finals ever.
“It was being given to us. We suffered a lot, but we made it. And here it is, now to enjoy. We can’t wait to be in Argentina to experience the madness that this is going to be. And, nothing, think about enjoying.” Messi said.
However, Messi thinks it is unlikely that he will be able to play in another World Cup after being crowned in his fourth appearance in these world cups at the age of 36, but he has said that that he will not retire from the national team for the time being because he wants to play some games with the condition world champion.
“Obviously I wanted to close my career with this, I can’t ask for anything anymore. Thank God he gave me all.” Messi said.
“Almost closing my career in this way is impressive. After this, what will there be? I was able to get the Copa America, the World Cup. It was given to me almost at the end.
“I love soccer, what I do. I enjoy being in the national team, the group, I want to continue living a few more games being world champion,” he added.
