Jurgen Klopp was upset with a situation where Liverpool was fouled in the 3-1 defeat to Brentford in Community Stadium on Monday.
Liverpool faced a difficult first half when Brentford conceded four times. David Mbeumo took a corner kick and smashed the foot of central defender Ibrahima Konate and flew back to Liverpool, opening the score in the 19th minute.
In the 27th and 40th minutes, respectively, Yoane Wissa twice brought the ball into the away team’s net from corners, but were denied by VAR because of offside.
Wissa scored a valid goal, from the live ball, with a header from close to the net in the 42nd minute.
According to Klopp, Liverpool could not control the game because the referee was lenient with Brentford, helping the host to comfortably commit fouls.
“Yeah, but actually that’s exactly the same as I would talk to my microwave, you get no response, really. It’s always the same.” Klopp said.
“Of course I’m not 100 percent happy, I will have to watch it back again and again because the two corners where they scored, one of them was offside or whatever it was, and then the other one of course we don’t behave perfectly.”
“But they are stretching the rules in this moment, they are pushing, holding and everything and the refs, that’s obviously what you can do, that’s why it’s really difficult and we could have done better.” Klopp added.
Klopp added he could not respect Brentford’s decision to concede a third goal, stressing that Konate had been clearly fouled.
“In that situation, when you’re sprinting and you’re pushed slightly from behind, you lose control and fall. If you’ve ever played football, you’ll understand that,” Klopp said.
“But the referee doesn’t think so, and the VAR team thinks the situation is not clear.” he added.
