Champions League Preview and Prediction: Sporting CP vs Tottenham

Two of the biggest clubs in European football will lock horns in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with Sporting CP hosting Tottenham Hotspur in Group D at Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The home team comes motivated for Tuesday’s match after a 4-0 win over Portimonense, counting for the Portuguese championship: the team’s goals were signed by Francisco Trincao, Nuno Santos and Pedro Goncalves.

It should be noted that the Lions beat Frankfurt, 0-3, in the first game of group stage of the Champions League.

Sporting normally works in a 3-4-3 tactical system, favouring a more offensive style of play, attacking through the flanks: Francisco Trincao is very fast and competent in transporting the ball to the attack.

Sporting CP has won 4, tied 4 and lost 2 of the last 10 home matches for all competitions. Their offense has scored regularly, as they have scored goals in 7 of the last 10 matches.

In their home games there is a tendency for goals, as 28 of their last 31 games have ended with Over 1.5 goals. In 9 games, Sporting never managed to turn the score around in the 4 games in which they conceded the first goal.

Out of this match are Jeremiah St. Juste, Daniel Bragança, Luis Neto and Jovane Cabral, all with physical problems.

Tottenham comes to this game after a 2‑0 win over Olympique Marseille. This is a team little affected by the home factor, that is, it presents similar results at home and away, since in the last 30 matches they have recorded 7 wins, 5 draws and 3 losses as a visitor, with a total of 28 goals scored and 13 conceded.

At home, Spurs won 10 wins, 1 draw and 4 defeats, with a total of 32 goals scored and 13 conceded. In the last 10 away matches Tottenham has won 5, tied 4 and lost 1.

Tottenham have conceded goals to the opponent in 7 of the last 10 matches, so their defense needs to improve, but their offense has scored regularly, as they managed to score goals in 9 of the last 10 games.

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte should play in 3-4-3 with Richarlison, Heung-min Son and Harry Kane the most advanced men on the team.

It should be noted that Tottenham is a team that enjoys playing in their midfield, with the aim of trying to shock their opponent through the counterattack.
