What Is a Trifecta Bet in Horse Racing?

Going for a trifecta is the determination of the first three horse in their order of the race. Although there’s more to know when it comes to taking a trifecta, that’s the general idea!

How Does a Trifecta Work?

For easier understanding, let us consider an example that may be topically closer to many readers.

For this you choose No. 1 to emerge first, No. 2 to finish second and No. 3 to come third. This is called a ‘straight trifecta’ and your runners need to come first, second and third respectively.

A stake is put down at $1 and runners 1, 2, and 3 complete the race in that exact order. It is laughter and gratitude to and finally – voila – you have won the trifecta.

If the result was one, three and two in that sequence then your bet would be a loser. Except if you dared to box a trifecta!

There are two basic kinds of trifectas: known as the straight trifecta and the boxed trifecta.

Straight Trifecta

The straight trifecta means that the partner is to select the first three horses in the race, for bonuses.

Boxed Trifecta

This means with the boxed trifecta you are only required to select three or more horses, and it does not really matter in which of the three places they finish.

While it costs less to box an exacta bet, it makes it more expensive to place a boxed trifecta, and the cost goes higher as you want more horses to be in your choice.
